Lars Thrane LT-3100
Device Summary
The Lars Thrane LT-3100 is an Iridium satellite communication system for vessels — voice, data, SMS and e-mail — with a built-in tracking function. When tracking is configured for the SBD transport in the Thrane (binary) format, the terminal sends a compact position report (time, position, course and speed over ground, and a GNSS quality flag) over Iridium Short Burst Data, and GSatTrack records each report as a position against the asset. Reports are sent on the time and distance triggers you configure, on power-on if enabled, and on demand.
Server Routing
The terminal does not connect to a server address itself. Its Iridium service provider provisions an SBD subscription for the terminal's IMEI and routes the SBD traffic to GSatTrack over Iridium DirectIP. Give the service provider the following destination when the SBD subscription is activated:
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Server | protocolparser.com |
| Port | 4845 |
| Protocol | TCP (Iridium DirectIP) |
Setup
Tracking is configured from the LT-3100 built-in web server; the LT-3110 Control Unit display cannot enable periodic tracking on its own.
Activate SBD. Ask your Iridium service provider to add an SBD subscription to the terminal's IMEI, with delivery by DirectIP to the destination in the table above. The IMEI is printed on the LT-3100 system box label and the LT-3130 Antenna Unit test sheet, and shown on the control unit under MENU → System → LT-3130 AU → IMEI.
Open the web server. Connect a PC to the LT-3110 Control Unit (directly or on the same LAN), read the control unit's IP address from MENU → System → Network (
IP Address, withLink StatusUp), and browse to it. Accept the browser's certificate warning to reach the dashboard. Log in as useradmin(factory passwordadmin— change it during installation).Configure tracking. Go to Configuration → Tracking and set:
Setting Value Transport type SBD Report format Thrane (binary) — not SIRIUS Track Time trigger Interval HH:MM, from0:01(1 minute) to168:00(7 days)Distance trigger Interval in NM, 0.1to999, with a Minimum time interval (HH:MM) so a fast vessel does not report continuouslyOptions → Send report on power-on Enable to get a report each time the terminal powers up Time and distance work independently — a report is sent when either condition is met, and both timers reset after each report. Example: distance
5.0NM with minimum time01:00sends at most one report per hour while moving fast, and one every 5 NM at low speed.Apply, then click Send report now to send a test report immediately.
Add the Asset in GSatTrack
Position reports are only stored once the terminal exists as an asset in GSatTrack.
- Go to the navigation menu and click on 'Add Item', then 'Add Asset'.
- Choose the Device: LT-3100 (manufacturer Lars Thrane).
- Enter the terminal's 15-digit IMEI (the one the SBD subscription was activated for).
- Click on 'Create Asset'.
Verify
- On the web server, Configuration → Tracking → Send report now sends a report at once; the asset should update in GSatTrack within a couple of minutes.
- On the control unit, MENU → System → Tracking shows the tracking status, the configured triggers, and Last Report with the details of the most recent report; the soft key Report Now sends another.
- A tracking symbol in the control unit's status bar confirms that periodic tracking is configured.
Note!
The report carries a GNSS quality flag. GSatTrack stores every report that contains a position; reports flagged with a poor fix (no 3D fix, or horizontal accuracy worse than 50 m) are stored with an unknown fix type so they can be told apart. A report sent while the terminal has no fix at all is logged but creates no position.
Additional Information
Key Features
- Iridium Connectivity — global coverage, pole to pole.
- Compact SBD Reports — a 10-byte report per position keeps airtime cost low, so short intervals are practical.
- Time, Distance and Power-On Triggers — configurable from 1 minute to 7 days and 0.1 to 999 NM.
- On-Demand Reports — from the web server or the control unit at any time.
- SMS and E-mail Formats — the terminal can also send text or human-readable reports to a phone or mailbox alongside SBD tracking.
Use Cases
- Fleet and Vessel Tracking — monitor position, course and speed of vessels anywhere at sea.
- Fishing and Workboat Compliance — regular position reporting at low airtime cost.
- Remote Operations — track vessels operating beyond terrestrial coverage.
Troubleshooting
- No positions after Send report now: confirm with the service provider that the SBD subscription is active for this IMEI and that DirectIP delivery points at
protocolparser.comport4845; confirm the asset's IMEI in GSatTrack matches the terminal's and that the device type is LT-3100. - Positions look wrong or implausible: check the report format is Thrane (binary) — the SIRIUS Track format is the same size and is not decoded by GSatTrack, so a terminal set to it can produce garbage positions rather than none.
- Reports stop while under way: check the Minimum time interval on the distance trigger; a long minimum interval limits how often a moving vessel reports.
- No position in the report: the control unit's Last Report shows whether the terminal had a GNSS fix at the time; check the antenna's sky view.
